Just a Copycat

Don did it, and I've never followed these mem thingies, so now I am:

Four jobs I have had in my life:
1) Paperboy - SF Chronicle
2) Dairy dessert products marketing specialist (scooped ice cream at Swensen's in Berkeley)
3) Export Letter of Credit negotiator
4) Graduate Affairs coordinator and overall fixer

Four movies I would watch over and over (and have):
1) Lawrence of Arabia
2) Casablanca
3) Out of the Past
4) The Four Feathers (Korda Bros. version from 1939, not that cheap trash of a few years back)
5) Dr. No. (Fuck it. This category needs five!)

Four places I have lived:
1) Barstow, CA
2) Camp Pendleton, CA
3) Yuma, AZ
4) Berkeley, CA

Four TV shows I like to watch(Jeez, there ain't many):
1) Unwrapped - food channel
2) Spongebob Squarepants (I have a three year old son! Besides, it's brilliant)
3) Keith Olbermann
4) Reruns of the Addams Family

Four places I have been on vacation:
1) Ireland
2) Mo'orea, French Polynesia
3) Lone Pine, CA
4) Kualoa, Oahu, HI

Four of my favorite foods:
1) My lovely wife's panko-breaded baked chicken breast
2) Grilled tri-tip
3) Grilled or poached salmon
4) A perfect navel orange

Four of my favorite animals:
1) Our dog, Springheel Jack; a strange and magnificent beast
2) Peregrine Falcon
3) Those weird little brilliant blue fish that thrive around the big coral heads in the lagoon near Cook's Bay, Mo'orea.
4) Arabian horse

Four places I would rather be right now:
1) Typing this in a time share at the Club Bali Hai, Cook's Bay, Mo'orea
2) On a grassy hill in the Himalaya, staring at Everest, on our way up to Base Camp
3) London, at the Queen's Birthday Parade, Trooping the Colour
4) Somewhere on the western slope of the White Mountains, staring out at the Owens Valley, CA

Dr. No was an absolutely legitimate reason for extending the list.

So many movies ... I have L of A on DVD but no one will watch it with me. Spongebob they will watch with me and it is brilliant, strangely so, can't really say why. Mo'orea doesn't seem to have made much of an impression on you.

Indeed, Dr. No had to be on there. It is still the essence of the literary Bond in so many ways. I think the geiger counter is probably the most sophisticated gadgetry in the entire film. Connery as Bond is a cold, cruel individual when he must be, just as the literary character was. On top of all that, he drove a Sunbeam Alpine during the chase scene.

As for the Letter of Credit thing, I negotiated export letters of credit for B of A in the early 80s. Those were dark years. Very dark.

Don, I will watch L of A with you any time. I have the dvd as well. Dayton loves it. (A chip off the old block , no error.) It might be my all time favorite. I would be hard pressed to turn it down if someone said I could only take one movie with me somewhere for an extended period. As for Spongebob, it harkens back to the adult satire in the child's format that we saw with Rocky and Bullwinkle, and Bugs Bunny. Jimmy Neutron manages the same.

Go to Mo'orea and stay there along Baie de Cook for a while, and I predict that thoughts of it will return to you when least expected. Let us say that the Tahitians there threw the greatest New Year's Eve party I've ever been to. Oh my GOD!
