...which speaks to one of my original motivations for this blog:

"The main problem in any democracy is that crowd-pleasers are generally brainless swine who can go out on a stage & whup their supporters into an orgiastic frenzy - then go back to the office & sell every one of the poor bastards down the tube for a nickel apiece. Probably the rarest form of life in American politics is the man who can turn on a crowd & still keep his head straight - assuming it was straight in the first place."

I think almost none of them are on straight. Something about politics turns humans into subhumans. It's a shame.

I think a man shouldn't be allowed to be president of the United States until and unless he can prove he doesn't want the job. But I guess power is very seductive. I wouldn't know.

Yeah, I wouldn't either. Or maybe I would, on a much tinier scale. Anyhow, this is kind of like Groucho's comment about never wanting to beloing to any club that would have him as a member. I wonder if Harry Truman was really like that, or that even he had a jones for power that was beyond the conception of the average Joe.

Harry Truman was, I think, a man who would be president, in part, as a duty. No politician is honest and pure by the standards of the-rest-of-us, but he was a good guy, I think. I never met him, although I lived in Independence before he died. He certainly dropped all the trappings of power just as soon as he came home from the White House.

"Something about politics turns humans into subhumans."

I'm more inclined to think there's something about being subhuman that allows one to turn to politics.
