Yes. He is directly to the point.
There have been times I sought to justify torture etc. It's not hard to construct a thought experiment in which torture becomes the most moral choice. But even then, it is a symptom of desperation. And how can we fall into that, when we don't know that the future holds even worse desperation?
I can guess under what conditions I would be rendered weak enough to coerce information. Those conditions are not met by any imprisonment circumstance at this time.
Our use of torture puts the lie to all of the talk about freedom and democracy on the march. The revelations of Abu Ghraib and possibly Guantanamo have a whole generation of people in the Middle East completely disbelieving the American line. I wonder how Karen Hughes is expecting to effectively combat this kind of thing on her feel good PR tour of the Middle East.
